Fat Cat on a Mat (by Phil Cox) is a fiction book, part of a collection called Phonics Readers, especially focus on stories working on rhymes. This story is recommend by the Curriculum Guidelines for Primary Education designed by the British Council and the Ministry of Education of Spain.
During the last term I worked on this book and some other together with some classmates, whose names are Alba, Mario and Laura. For this story, we designed a complete lesson plan, for Day 2 in the Unit of Work. This lesson plan was designed according to the suggestions made in the guidelines. However, this one was our first experience with Literacy in the Primary Classroom, so probably you'll find some things which can be improved.

WORD WALL
and word bank
and word bank
We also created this word wall for the middle part of the story. Through it, you can work phonics, sentence formation, syllable segmentation... We used velcro to stick the words, so that they can be removed or changed and the frieze can be re-used with other parts of the story or even with other stories.

To design the word wall and other activities based on stories, is advisable to make your own word bank with the words of the story you consider useful in some way. You can classify them according to different criteria. You can download my WORD BANK for Fat Cat on a Mat, clicking HERE.
FROZEN SCENES
We also used drama to work the story. In this case, we worked with frozen scenes. The scene chosen was the final one, the most representative and important in the story. This is a technic which can be used with young children in a effective way to understand the story and prompt some speaking.
