Literacy in the Primary Classroom

In Spain, my country, one of the literacy approach for Primary stages is through the 'convenio MEC/British council', a document elaborated by the Ministry of Education of my country together with the British Council. In this document we can find guidelines for every subject in the Primary Syllabus, including Literacy in English Language. You can find the book in most of University Libraries.

You can also get an idea of the project in this file I got from the Internet.

For the Literacy Area, this document establishes:
  • Listening and Speaking Targets: they are set for each cycle (first, second and third), worked through group discussion and interaction, and through drama.
  • Reading and Writing Targets: they are set for each year (from 1 to 6), and they are divided in:
    • Text level work
    • Sentence level work
    • Word level work.

In this picture you can see a summarization of this:

Also, in the guidelines elaborated by the Spanish Ministry and the British Council, some books are recommended for each year, classified in fiction and non-fiction books. In this post you can see the criteria we must follow when choosing books from each group for each of the stages.

At the end of the Literacy section, we can find an example of Unit of Work for the book 'My Cat Like To Hide In Boxes', by Eve Sutton. Accompanying the unit we have some ideas on exploiting a fictional text. Among them, we can read some suggestions for configuring a lesson plan. According to the guidelines, in each lesson we should work on both three of the levels -text, sentence and word- and it would be a recommendable idea to organize the activities in:
  • Whole Class Work
  • Guided Group Work
  • Independent Group Work
  • Plenary
For further information, just read the documents linked to this post and have a look at the activities I've created for each book I've worked on through the tab menu.
