Phonological awareness package, level 9: Phonemic manipulation

'Phoneme Manipulation' is the 9th and last level in phonemic awareness, according to the method I followed, which you can become familiar with in this post.

After 'Segmenting and blending' (levels 7 and 8), it's time for our pupils to develop an ability to delete and substitute phonemes in words.

The example I followed to work with in this level is an activity called 'Switcheroo'.

For this activity you can use flashcards, high-tech -such as my presentation for Smartboard Notebook- or even without more resources than your voice.

ACTIVITY: SWITCHEROO

The activity works in the following way:

Explain to the children that you will say a word or show a picture. You then play switcheroo with one of the phonemes. If you are working with flashcards or with the Smartboard, you'll show another picture. The new word will have changed in one sound: initial, medial or final. You want the children to tell you which sound was switched. For example, if you show -and name- a 'book' and then a 'boot', the children should respond that /k/ was switched with /t/.

Here you have some example I created, but can add as many as you want.

What I do is to use the curtain from the Notebook software, so that the activity look like this:

First, I show a picture, in this case a book. We can prompt the children to segment and blend the word before showing the other picture.

Then, I draw the curtain back and show other picture, in this case a boot -we follow with the example previously given:

Now the children have to say that the final sound /k/ has been switched with /t/. We also can work on the new word before ask for the switched phoneme.
